Product Water Footprint

Measuring the Amount of Water Used in the Production Process

The product water footprint is a measure of the amount of water consumed by a product over its lifetime, from the acquisition of the natural resources that make up the product to its disposal. It is calculated according to the ISO 14046 standard. A cradle-to-grave water footprint study covering the entire life of a product can be carried out, or it can be carried out in different scopes for various purposes, such as cradle-to-door, door-to-door or door-to-grave. The water consumed is classified under three headings: blue, green and gray:

Blue Water Footprint: Used groundwater and surface freshwater resources.

Green Water Footprint: Refers to rainwater used.

Gray Water Footprint: The amount of freshwater used for the disposal of pollution load.

Water Types and Categories

The water footprint is divided into three different categories, blue, green and gray water, each representing different types of water used in production processes.

Calculation Based on ISO 14046 Standards

Water footprint calculations according to the ISO 14046 standard accurately and transparently reveal the amount of water consumed by products throughout their entire life cycle.
